On June 30, I went to Dunback Meadow in Lexington to search the nettle for Red Admiral caterpillars. I was surprised to see the variety in color. While by far the majority were black, there were a number that were intermediate in color, and . . . . . . one that was almost entirely white. I took one home, along with some nettle, and by July 1, it had tranformed into a chrysalis. On July 8, it had turned extremely dark, apparently overnight. By that afternoon it had turned into a butterfly. Sorry, no pictures of the buttefly, who was raring to go.
