On January 4 I got several phone calls about a loon in distress on
the Mystic River. I advised all that the Animal Rescue League was
the only organization I knew of with the resources to help - a few
people had already called them and were waiting for a reply.
In the late afternoon I went down to the river to see what was
happening and saw a man in an Animal Rescue League uniform who was
already working on a rescue.
I watched as the loon "ooched" along the ice, trying to escape the
net, but then was delighted to see the net go over him. I was even
more delighted to see the loon try to bite the rescuer - it still
had some fight in it.
They told me it would be evaluated by their vet and taken to Tufts
if deemed necessary. Just as they were leaving, Paul Roberts and
Janet Kovner arrived to check on the loon as well, so they were also
relieved to see it was in good hands.
