In 2007, I discovered a
Broad-winged Hawk on nest on June 27. They fledged on August 13, which
seemed exceptionally late.
During the winter the old nest disintegrated, but on May 1, 2008 I walked by the old nest site, and was delighted to see an adult building a nest. I checked periodically, and just saw the adult on the nest. On June 27 I finally saw the chicks for the first time, three this year instead of the two last year. Three days later on June 30 they've gotten a lot more feathers. I also saw the adult. It appeared to have a foot injury. The middle talon is bent forward, and although I can't be sure, I think it is missing part of the outer talon. On July 6 I could only see one chick in the nest. As I moved to a different angle, it hopped out of the nest, fledging five weeks earlier than last year. It then scrambled up to a higher branch. On the other side of the tree a second chick was perched. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the third chick until I got another angle on the nest, and saw the third chick still waiting to fledge. |
